    Travelling with a School-Age Child

    Article

Traveling with your child can be an exciting and enriching experience for the entire family. At this stage, kids are full of curiosity, energy, and a sense of wonder, making them excellent travelers. However, as any parent would agree, traveling with children is both fun and challenging in equal measure.

    Preparing for the Trip

Some tips to consider when planning for a trip involves having a school going on is; As anticipated, usually there are some mistakes and flaws that might occur in the course of the trip. However, if adequate time is spent on preparation, one is less likely to make those mistakes.

    Involve Your Child in Planning

School going kids love to be part of something so involve them in the trip planning process.

Allow them to decide where to travel, what activities to engage in or what clothes to wear in a particular trip. It will not only help to create desire to go for the trip but it will also promote a sense of responsibility.

    Plan an Itinerary with Flexibility

If you have a plan, it is good, but do not be too rigid, bear some room for changes. Kids may easily get bored or even sleepy, so it is desirable to keep the schedule quite flexible adding several interruptions and funny ideas in-between. Occasionally it may be helpful to combine some of the activities that your child likes, for example a museum, a theme park or nature.

    Educate Before You Go

If you are travelling to a new city or possibly a new country, it will spare some time and introduce the child to the new place. There are many things which can be done to make the experience more meaningful and exciting for them, such as, reading books, watching documentaries, or discussing life and traditions of the locality.

    Pack Smart

In packing for a trip, there is no need to pack so many things, rather pack what would be important. Other items that should also not be lacking are some clothes and toiletries for your child, a small travel bag with snacks for the child and a bottle of water for the child, a travel pillow and some interesting toys or books that the child will need during the journey.

Keeping Your Child Engaged During the Trip

Travelling for hours may be quite tedious particularly to children, all the more if they are easily bored. A major tip in any travel is to keep the children occupied and happy on the trip.

    Bring Entertainment

Bring a range of things that your child may wish to engage himself in, such as books, crayons, puzzles, and gadgets such as iPads or tablets loaded with movies or educational games. Replace these activities at different parts of the journey so as not to cause the customers to get bored.

    Interactive Games

Car rides and aeroplane trips are perfect for such activities as games. Old games such as I Spy, Twenty Questions or word games which would help your child to be more on the thinking side of things. You can also pack small travel games such as backgammon or small sets of cards for a little fun in the fight with your family.

    Encourage Journaling

Prepare your child with a travel journal as you know his/her experiences, drawings and collections of postcards and souvenirs. It not only also involves them, but also assists in capturing and subsequently reviewing their experiences.

    Stay Active

Be sure to plan for stretches early enough especially in case of a long journey in a car or a flight. At halt ensure that your child exercises a little, perhaps stretch your legs or move around in order to keep him/her/they alert and avoid worrying about the time spent in the car.

    Tips for a Smooth Journey

This may come as a shock to many travellers even when they have an all-time itinerary plan on the go. These are useful tips which may assist you in avoiding the possible pitfalls and making it easier to go through.

    Arrive Early

If you are travelling by air, by train or even by car be sure to arrive early to avoid some of the pressures of having to run to your next destination. This also helps the child to also have time to play with friends before the onset of departure time.

    Keep Snacks Handy

Children who are hungry get easily annoyed so ensure that there is food which can easily be accessed by the children. Some of the suggested snacks include fruits, granola bars and sandwiches, nuts and crackers because they do not require preparation during trips.

    Stay Calm and Patient

Tours are inevitably to be held up, redirected or in many other just say “No Way” circumstances. Do not lose your composure and do not get angry, and therefore, do not make your child angry either. It will make them remain calm and positive and this is all because of your positive attitude.

    Prepare for Emergencies

Always have a small first aid kit and any needful medicines along with one’s contacts in case of an emergency. It is also advisable to learn more about the hospitals or other medical facilities in the area one is travelling to this is just in case of any eventuality.

    Stick to a Routine

As far as possible, ensure that the child is kept to his or her normal schedule particularly on eating time and sleeping time. This is one way of making your child feel at ease especially when you are travelling and thereby helps to reduce stress that comes with travelling.

Having your child in school is fun especially when you are on a journey; the only thing that you need is the right attitude and preparation. When planning for a vacation together with your child, making him or her involved in planning for the trip, keeping him/her busy during the trip, and being calm and adaptable will ensure that the entire family had a wonderful holiday. No matter whether you are walking in an unknown city or just driving a car, having a rest on a beach, or in the middle of the road trip, you and your child will create good and warm memories.
