Health and Wellness of a Toddler

    Article

Caring for the health and well-being of toddlers as they grow through these years is very important. From the infancy stage to the early childhood, development is rapid in the physical, emotional and the social development of toddlers. Let’s discuss the general diseases or issues that may affect toddlers. Moreover, regular checkup of a child by the doctor and the immunization program for toddlers is necessary.

Let’s take a look at some health and wellness of a toddler in more detail.

    Common Toddler Illnesses and Concerns

Toddlers may get easily affected by a number of diseases because their immune systems are not yet fully developed. Understanding common health issues can help parents recognise symptoms early and seek appropriate care.

    Ear Infections

Children at the age of two years experience ear infections commonly after a cold. Some of the signs are restlessness, ear pulling and lack of sleep. Whenever a toddler displays the symptoms of an ear infection he or she must be taken to a pediatrician for diagnosis and action.

    Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis is also called the stomach flu, and it may result in vomiting and diarrhoea. Infants should be encouraged to take fluids in this illness and should be taken for a checkup if the situation does not improve.

    Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

This viral illness involves formation of ulcers in the mouth and the rash on the back of the hands and feet. It spreads easily but only warrants one week of administration of treatment. Constant reassurance should be made by parents to ensure that the child is comfortable and soaked up.

    Allergies and Asthma

At this age, some kids may have allergies or asthma mostly the toddlers may have such problems as sneezing, coughing and wheezing. If the parents think that their child might have the symptoms of allergic reaction, it is advisable to seek the services of a physician.

    Importance of Regular Check-Ups

It is also important for a child to seek check-ups occasionally. Such visits are good for checking on growth, development and general health of the children with no illness.

    Growth Monitoring

During general body examination, pediatricians will weigh the children, and take the height and the head circumference of a toddler to ensure that the child is growing appropriately. It is necessary to monitor growth patterns so as to notice signs of any health complications at the earliest opportunity.

    Developmental Assessments

At routine developmental health checkups, pediatricians weigh and measure the child, as well as monitor the child’s physical, mental and motor development progress. These assessments enable one to know if there is any delay or any issues that need early intervention if they exist.

    Parental Guidance

Parents seek care for various reasons such as nutritional information, sleep issues and general behavioral patterns, and several visits can occur. It also entitles pediatricians to discuss beneficial habits, various issues parents may face, and any other inquiries related to parenting.

    Building a Relationship

Frequent check-ups also make the child, parents and the health care provider to establish a trusting relationship. This relationship is crucial especially in the view on the development of rapport in the disclosure of any health issues in the growing up of the child.

    Immunization Schedule

Vaccinations as one of the essential aspects of early childhood care and development help to prevent various diseases in a toddler. Immunization schedule informs the right vaccines that should be administered to children in their early ages.

    DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis)

Given in a series of injections, DTaP helps prevent the following severe diseases: The first three shots are administered in the first six months of life, subsequent vaccines are given between 15 and 18 months of age and then between 4 and 6 years of age.

    MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella)

MMR is administered at 12-15 months and also at 4-6 years. They are all highly contagious diseases and this vaccine is very important in preventing such diseases.

    Varicella (Chickenpox)

Varicella vaccination is given at 12–15 months of age and repeated at age 4–6 years. It aids in preventing chickenpox that causes complications.

    Hepatitis A and B

Hepatitis A is tendered at the age of 12-23 months while hepatitis B is tendered at birth up to the age of 18 months. These vaccines are used in the prevention of liver diseases.

    Influenza

Influenza immunisation should be given to every child who is at least six months of age and whose routine care involves seeing a GP. The service of vaccination is necessary for fighting seasonal flu which is dangerous for children in particular.

It is in these earliest years of a child that crucial aspects of his or her health and welfare are most important to him or her. Through awareness of these particular diseases, proper antenatal visits, and immunizations for children, the parents can ensure their kids develop strong and hearty. Approachable medical care that can be offered when a child is still small sets effective basic rules that let toddlers turn into healthy individuals from the start and further on.
